"Guys, I'm another Hawaii Sherman rider(the same wheel he was on); That stretch of freeway is riddled with potholes and the gaps between the sections of that elevated freeway are not very smooth and are jarring enough in a car transitioning over them, much more so on a EUC, regardless of suspension or not. The thinking is he got lost(being unfamiliar with the area), and inadvertently got on the freeway- it is very easy to do that where a three-lane road(Nimitz Highway) branches off, one of those branches being the H-1 freeway; I've seen tourists on mopeds that were never designed to operate at those speeds mistakenly take that "exit" and found themselves on the freeway, so it is a real possibility that's what occurred here; Now, you can make the argument that he would have known pretty quickly that he was no longer on surface streets and shouldn't have proceeded any further, but perhaps it wasn't safe to turn around, or maybe he figured he'd continue on in the shoulder until he could get off at the nearest offramp (which would have been the Honolulu International Airport offramp), but we'll never know what his thought process was that night."
